Congratulations PACT Ottawa!

Last week, I attended the monthly meeting with an organization that I am a member with: Persons Against the Crime of Trafficking (PACT) Ottawa.  We meet every third Thursday of the month.

This organization is doing such great work to help bring awareness to the human trafficking and modern day slavery crisis that exists in our world.  I wanted to share some information from our website:

"PACT-Ottawa has many ongoing activities in the realm of public education.  We have been funded by the federal government to design and deliver a human trafficking awareness campaign for truck drivers – an occupational group that can be key in identifying instances of trafficking in persons.  We have a growing Speakers’ Bureau – a cadre of trained and knowledgeable volunteers who respond to the numerous requests for public speakers.  PACT-Ottawa members are able to take advantage of our exclusive lending library.  Our signature event each year is the End Slavery Day event, which takes place on December 2nd, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.

In the past year, PACT has made an impact:

• 33% of members have benefited from PACT library materials
• THE WALK has reached more than 600 people
• Live! we have presented information about human trafficking to over 1,000 people in our community
• On Air! our message has been broadcast even more widely through radio and television appearances"

On November 5, PACT Ottawa will be recognized with a Community Safety Award from Crime Prevention Ottawa.  I am so proud to be a part of a community that has made a commitment to making our city a safe place to live!

• Today there are over 27 million people in slavery. [ps. the current population of canada is 33.3 million]  
• More people are in slavery today than ever before in history. 
• Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime on our planet
• Human trafficking is a $32 billion dollar industry - greater than the profits of Nike, Starbucks and Google COMBINED!!
• 80% of those trafficked are women and children.
• 70% of those trafficked are for the purpose of sexual exploitation
• Every minute 2 children are trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation
• In 2007 slave traders made 8 times the amount of the un annual budget
